Thal desert was known for its austere unproductive landscape, infested with high sand dunes, scarcity of vegetation, shortage of water, extremes of climate and poverty from centuries. In 1949, Government of Pakistan prepared a plan under Thal Development Authority to develop the desert. Half of Thal desert was changed into lush green fields by Thal Development Authority just in twenty years. Now, the inhabitants of the desert are happy and full of confidence. The paper provides information about the geographical location of the Thal desert, the historical background of the Thal canal, socio-economic conditions of the people of the area before and after Thal development. This research paper is an attempt to highlight the historical event of desert development.
