Minocycline as coadyuvant to periodontal therapy, characteristics and evidence of its use in dentistry. Review.
Abstract
Antibiotic therapy is used as a complement to mechanical therapy in periodontal disease;however, they can trigger considerable side effects, as well as not reaching the dose needed to treat the infection. In dentistry, one of the antibiotics used in periodontal therapy is minocycline, which has adverse effects that limit its use, because of the development of controlled release systems has allowed its use. During this bibliographic review, were analyze the results of the use of minocycline through prolonged-release devices in the control of periodontal pocket microorganisms, concluding that minocycline microspheres achieve greater bioavailability of the drug using low drug concentrations, which reduces its side effects.
