Abstract

The use of strategic areas is presented, conceived as wide but defined spaces, for the determination of development strategies in universities. Through the exhaustive examination of institutional and contextual information, as well as demanding copulative requirements, a limited number of strategic areas are identified that can generate the highest impact on the development of the institutions, together with assuming unpredictable circumstances and the diversity of conditions. complex. The analysis of a case is carried out in a Chilean state university. It is a replicable procedure, which is part of the adaptive strategy model for universities. The strategic areas identified are: (i) integrated training system, (ii) positioning by intra-institutional and inter-institutional integration, and (iii) pertinent governance.
