Analysis of the socioeconomic situation of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute: challenges and perspectives.
Abstract
The situation in the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS) presents notable problems. The lack of full representation on its Board of Directors is one example, with one of the representations acting on an extended basis for several years. The IESS and the Banco del Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social (BIESS) are complex and manage significant resources, approximately 20% of the country's GDP. IESS health insurance has faced financial imbalances due to rising costs without adequate financing, as they serve population groups without the capacity to contribute. The medical units have also been weakened, affecting the care provided to members.
