Cultural perspectives related to self-management in people with chronic illness.
Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between chronic disease self-management and cultural factors in people with chronic diseases. Using the Multidimensional Model of Cultural Competence, a correlational study was conducted with 284 people with diabetes and hypertension. Questionnaires were applied to assess self-management and correlations with cultural factors were analyzed. It was found that higher education, better perception of well-being and longer duration of diagnosis were associated with better self-management. People with chronic diseases showed moderately high levels of self-management, underlining the importance of cultural and educational factors. This highlights the need to improve cultural sensitivity in health care to optimize self-management and health outcomes.
