Abstract

Migration is the change of residence across a geographic boundary, and by 2020 more than 11.2 million Latin Americans had emigrated to various countries. Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and is considered endemic in 21 Latin American countries. Currently, CD is found in non-endemic countries such as France, Ireland, Germany, and Japan, with more than 460,000 reported cases. Because migrants acquire the disease in their countries of origin, diagnostic and treatment methods in non-endemic countries are poorly understood, making disease control difficult. Health policy regarding migration and its relationship with CD worldwide is unclear.
