Abstract

The history of euthanasia reflects an evolution of cultural, ethical and legal values in various societies. From the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the philosophical debates of ancient Greece and Rome, euthanasia has been viewed in multiple ways. In modern times, the Nazi regime showed the dangers of its misuse. Currently, countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Ecuador have legalized and regulated euthanasia under specific conditions, as exemplified by Judgment 67-23-IN/241 in Ecuador. Cases such as those of Tine Nys and Brittany Maynard have highlighted the ethical and legal challenges of euthanasia. Ethical guidelines, medical protocols and mental health strengthening are proposed to balance patients' rights and ensure ethical and compassionate care.
