Transformation towards peace: transitional justice as a human rights tool
Abstract
Ecuador's recent history has been marked by grave human rights violations, including genocide, torture and forced disappearances, which have generated profound suffering and impunity. In response, transitional justice was implemented as a process aimed at social reconstruction and the promotion of equitable and lasting justice. This study, based on a documentary analysis and a mixed methodological approach, reveals that both the Ombudsman's Office and the victims have played a crucial role in this process. However, reparation measures, such as the Ministry of Defense's public apology, have been insufficient, underscoring the need for more substantial actions to achieve true reconciliation and peace in Ecuador
