Migration, remittances, and the culture of poverty: the case of the citrus-growing region of Tamaulipas.
Abstract
The objective of this article is to examine, from a culture of poverty perspective, the impact of labor migration from the citrus-growing region of Tamaulipas to the United States and its effect on children's education in families in that region. Using a qualitative methodology, interviews were conducted with 18 mothers, 41 students, and 15 teachers from different educational levels. Three focus groups were formed, including students from primary, secondary, and high school. The results indicate that a crucial factor is the type of migration of the parent, as well as the presence of the father as an authority figure. This variable is linked to the achievement of children's academic goals.
