Abstract

This article analyzes the transformation of universities between 1990 and 2024, moving from traditional models to flexible, digital ecosystems. The evolution encompasses four stages: structural consolidation in the 1990s, initial digitalization in the 2000s, the expansion of hybrid models in the 2010s, and the forced digital maturity post-pandemic, marked by the rise of artificial intelligence. Despite the progress toward self-directed and globalized learning, challenges persist, such as the digital divide among older faculty, resistance to pedagogical change, and regulatory rigidity. The article concludes that universities must prioritize continuous professional development and structural innovation to remain relevant in the face of the demands of a constantly changing technological and professional landscape.
