Universities as accelerators of regional development: a critical analysis.
Abstract
This article examines the role of universities as drivers of regional development through a critical literature review. It analyzes theoretical perspectives explaining how higher education institutions contribute to the economic and social growth of their geographic environments. The findings indicate that universities function not only as centers for knowledge generation but also as engines of innovation, entrepreneurship, and human capital formation; furthermore, underlying structures are critically examined, and diverse perspectives are presented regarding collaboration mechanisms among universities, local governments, and the private sector. The conclusions underscore the need for public policies that strengthen these alliances, highlighting both the opportunities and the limitations of higher education within this context.
