Abstract

The article argues for the importance of the American press in the progress of the historiography of the Chilean-Peruvian controversy. In the absence of works that address their attitude, it is suggested to think of it as a communicative agent that built an imperial discourse on the litis. Theoretically, the factual density (derived from diplomatic facts) and textual density (typed in 3234 news) is discussed from the field of imaginaries. Heuristically, some structural characteristics of the sources are detailed. Then, it is exemplified, based on the Pacific War, a hermeneutical possibility. The conclusions recommend to deepen the analysis of the news in front of the dispute to obtain an accurate knowledge about the journalistic representations of Chile and Peru in the United States.
